The legal battle between Apple and Qualcomm drags on. After Apple accused the chipmaker of ‘double-dipping‘ by charging once for a chip and again for a patent license, Qualcomm has hit back. Qualcomm’s response to Apple’s latest filing says that Apple wouldn’t even have been able to make an iPhone without its patented technology, reports CNET. At the heart of the dispute is that Qualcomm refuses to sell its modem chips to any manufacturer unless the company also pays a licence fee for its patents....

A report earlier this week described Apple’s growing struggles to add 5G functionality to upcoming iPhones. Now, Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon has addressed Apple’s struggle amid the ongoing legal battle between the two companies. Amon was asked about Apple’s 5G efforts and said that while he “can’t really comment on what Apple is doing,” it’s risky for any company to wait to introduce a 5G device. As reported by Axios, Amon explained that the longer a company waits to add 5G, the higher the bar will be for them to meet....

MacRumors points us to a Korean forum where a user reportedly posted a picture of the iPad 3’s Retina display. As you can see in the image above, both the iPad 3 (bottom) and iPad 2 (top) displays are compared. Both look to measure 9.7-inches, but they have different cable arrangements. iFixit provided a teardown of the iPad 2’s display for comparison purposes. The purported Retina iPad 3 display pictured above has three brown connectors, instead of the iPad 2’s two connectors, to presumably power the 2048×1536 resolution of the new display....

With the coronavirus outbreak having highlighted the risks of having too much production capacity in one country, iPhone assembler Wistron has announced that it expects to have 50% of production outside China by 2021. This includes a $46M investment in a Texas plant … Digitimes reports. Wistron was for a time Apple’s sole iPhone assembler in India, though it has since been joined by Foxconn. Wistron makes older models – from the iPhone SE, which is still sold in the country despite being unavailable in most markets, to the iPhone 8....

Smartphone parts supplier ETrade Supply just posted alleged leaked OEM parts of the iPad mini’s nearly 8-inch LCD screen and 4490mAh battery. Apple’s much-discussed iPad mini is set to unveil at the company’s media event next Tuesday, and today’s parts pictures possibly confirm earlier reports and give a sneak peak as to what to expect from the folks in Cupertino. The device’s display is “about 162mm in length and 124mm in width,” according to ETrade Supply, with a ratio of 4:3....
