The past several months have done much to demonstrate why Miles Morales may be be the best Spider-Man, proving himself stronger, more determined, and more courageous than even Peter Parker. But as his latest appearance in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #14 proves, he’s also one of the most creative when it comes to instilling terror in his enemies, instead of plain old webbing.
The issue looks to be a special one for fans of Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, from which Miles first originated. For starters, the Ultimate Green Goblin is promised to appear and tussle with miles in both the plot synopsis and the cover art. But more importantly, the Mission miles is currently working has to do with a new drug being trafficked by the crime boss Ultimatum (and something tells us the two aren’t a coincidence). So when Miles gets the drop on drug dealers in Marvel’s official preview of Miles Morales: Spider-Man #14, he decides to try out a new approach, and be a better Spider-Man on a daily basis. How? By pretending to be a ghost, obviously.
The fact that the drug deal takes place in a cemetery is probably crucial context to grasp Miles’ decision making skills, but you can’t argue with the results. Well, not the results of Spider-Man’s ambush, anyway. The actual result of taking down a gang of drug dealers may not amount to much, considering the massive, hulking, cruel monster pulling the police’s strings. All the success that comes from Miles deciding to embody ‘Ghost-Man’ instead of Spider-Man is cut short by the drug dealers’ dialogue. With Fisk controlling the police, and presumably wanting to keep the drug trade flowing, taking down dealers or suppliers isn’t going to make a difference. But something tells us Miles isn’t going to give up that easily. Even if it’s a total unknown just what ‘precious’ something Miles will lose before this issue’s major showdown.
