The black suit adventures of New York’s neighborhood hero are about to continue in Symbiote Spider-Man: Alien Reality #1, and he may have an unconventional partner in Kraven the Hunter. Though, there may be more than meets the eye in this over-sized 40-page first issue.
The original creative team from Symbiote Spider-Man looks to return to the “wondrous” black-suit in this new installment of the Alien Costume Saga. The first Symbiote Spider-Man series concluded with all cylinders firing, as fans saw all the boom-bam action of black-suited Spider-Man and an ending that has them wondering what’s next for their favorite neighborhood hero. This series was pitched as a revisit to one of the most iconic eras of Spider-Man comics when Peter Parker returned from the Secret Wars events with a sleek new suit that responded to his thoughts. In the new miniseries, Symbiote Spider-Man: Alien Reality #1 it seems as though Peter might lose control again as he slips into a new reality while fighting Kraven.
In Peter David and Greg Land’s Symbiote Spider-Man: Alien Reality #1, Spider-Man, and Kraven engage each other in an opening battle at John F. Kennedy airport where the Hunter is being teased by the Web-Slinger yet again. As both characters struggle to out-muscle the other, Kraven then punches Spider-Man in mid-exchange. Enforcing his hunting strategy is just fine, despite Spidey’s suggestion to move it to the jungle. So far, nothing short of familiar as fans expect this kind of exchange in one of Spider-Man’s greatest rivalries. What is not expected is how this battle turns from a brawl into a partnership.
Marvel comics gives CBR an exclusive preview of the forthcoming issue. In this preview, Peter and Land reveal Kraven has poisoned Spider-Man with a toxin which alters the reality surrounding the Wall-Crawler. However, it is unclear whether the toxin transports Peter Parker to another dimension or simply acts as a sedative to knockout the black-suited hero. In whatever way, there is a potential clue in Kraven’s reaction upon injecting the poison into Spider-Man’s system. The toxin seems to do little to stop Spider-Man, who is at this point being physically controlled by the symbiote, but it seems as though it does affect Peter who slips into an alternate reality where Kraven is his crime-fighting partner.
Peter David looks to continue to prove he’s the right person to redevelop the relationship Peter Parker has with the famed black symbiote suit. For over thirty plus years, Spidey has donned the black suite making it look cool every time he does. It is no different in this continuation as Spider-Man enters a new reality, not as Kraven’s prey, but as his concerned partner and adventurous sidekick. Fans are probably wondering what more can be said about Spider-Man’s brief occupancy as a host to the symbiotic alien parasite, but with Kraven now by his side, it looks like there’s more story to tell.
