Wentworth Miller, star of the FOX crime drama Prison Break, says that as far as he knows, a sixth season of the show is unlikely to come out in 2020. The series originally aired for four seasons on FOX between 2005 and 2009. Back in 2017, FOX revived the series for a fifth season of nine episodes, which aired from April 4th to May 30th of that year. This seemed to be the end of the story, but then cast member Dominic Purcell hinted at a possible Prison Break season 6. This was later confirmed by FOX, though they stated the new season of Prison Break would be a lot different, and that it was only in the very early stages of development.
Prison Break stars Miller as Michael Scofield and Purcell as Lincoln Burrows, two brothers fighting against the system which put one of them behind bars. At the start of the series, Lincoln is sentenced to death for a crime he didn’t commit. While he has accepted this as his fate, his brother Michael is determined to save him. Michael develops an elaborate plan to break his brother out of prison, and given the title of the show, it’s easy to guess where it goes. The series also stars Sarah Wayne Callies (The Walking Dead) as Sara Tancredi, and Amaury Nolasco as Fernando Sucre.
According to Miller’s Instagram, he has “no idea when (or if) there will be a new season.” The actor made a post publicly answering a direct message he received about when season 6 of Prison Break is coming. He noted that he isn’t involved in making the decision of if or when to have a sixth Prison Break season, and reminded fans TV shows take a long time to be produced. Because of this, he doesn’t expect a new season will come out this year.
After Prison Break’s initial run, the associated stars went on to act in other successful projects. Both Miller and Purcell joined the Arrowverse on The CW, playing criminal partners Leonard Snart and Mick Rory, who are a clear nod to their characters in Prison Break. They quickly became fan favorites, with both characters eventually turning to the good side, teaming up with heroes like The Flash and Green Arrow. Miller has since left the Arrowverse, but Purcell continues to play Rory, now a main character on the spin-off series Legends of Tomorrow.
This update doesn’t mean a season 6 of Prison Break isn’t coming. The revival of the series came out eight years after the original run ended, so it might just take a few more years. Both Purcell and Miller seem interested in continuing with their roles, and the show’s influence continues to grow, as there is even a Manga adaptation of Prison Break now available. On the other hand, after five seasons revolving around the brothers and their life of crime, maybe there isn’t much left to say. Some people were against the revival of the series for that very reason. Only time will tell whether a season 6 of Prison Break is in the cards, and if so, when it will finally hit TV screens.
