Project Blue Book season 2 is happening, but when will it release and what can audiences expect from it? Based on real-life UFO studies by the United States Air Force, History Channel’s Project Blue Book season 1 wrapped up in March 2019. And now, fans want to know what to expect from Project Blue Book season 2.
Project Blue Book stars Aidan Gillen as Dr. J. Allen Hynek. In the History series, the astrophysics professor teams up with Air Force Captain Michael Quinn (Michael Malarkey) to investigate sightings of unidentified flying objects. The experience ultimately inspires Dr. Hynek to become a ufologist, one who created the “Close Encounter” classification system.
Gillen famously portrayed the devious Littlefinger on HBO’s Game of Thrones; however, Project Blue Book is something entirely different (and based on real events). Here’s everything we know about Project Blue Book season 2, including its potential release date and story details.
Project Blue Book Season 2 Release Date
As of March 2019, Project Blue Book season 2 doesn’t have an official release date. However, it seems likely that Project Blue Book season 2 will most likely release in January 2020, at least if History repeats itself. Last July, the Project Blue Book season 1 trailer premiered, so we’ll probably get a first look at Project Blue Book season 2 later this summer. Unlike limited series that are developed for single-season runs, History reportedly produced Project Blue Book with the understanding that season 2 would happen, and its season 1 ending proves as much.
Project Blue Book Season 2 Story
In Project Blue Book season 1, Dr. Hynek’s changing beliefs culminate with the explosive season finale entitled “The Washington Merry-Go Round”. The episode recreates the 1952 Washington, D.C. UFO incident, in which various sightings were reported from July 12 to July 29. For Project Blue Book’s story, this event allows the show to establish that Dr. Hynek has reached the crossroads, so to speak, and that he’s willing to deceive others in pursuit of his goals. Specifically, he tells President Harry Truman and other government officials that the Washington Mall incident doesn’t correlate with extraterrestrial intelligence. For Littlefinger fans, this moment is probably especially intriguing, as Gillen’s Game of Thrones character uses deceit to his advantage, and at every opportunity.
Based on the Project Blue Book season 1 finale, Dr. Hynek seems to have adopted a ufologist frame of mind. In fact, Gillen has confirmed this concept, stating (via IGN), “This is the first we see of him as a UFOlogist instead of some government stooge.” So, History has the creative flexibility to not only further base Project Blue Book season 2 on actual events, but to also use a creative license for dramatic purposes. In other words, Dr. Hynek’s life will become especially complicated as he looks beyond perceived truths in order to understand the larger picture. The story trajectory suggests that Project Blue Book season 2 will indeed be more expansive, but only time will tell if loyal viewers embrace Dr. Hynek’s evolving character arc.
