The first teaser trailer for A Quiet Place 2 just released, and fans are already eager to dissect its deeper meanings and what it could mean for the movie on the whole.
A Quiet Place 2’s teaser trailer initially dropped during Black Christmas screenings in theaters, and is set for a full trailer release on New Year’s Day. The film will release on March 20, 2020. Returning cast for the film includes Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe. New cast members include Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou. John Krasinski, who played father Lee Abbott in the first film and perished, returns to the production as A Quiet Place 2’s writer and director.
The teaser, which is only 30 seconds long, confirms the setting for the next film. Some speculated that, since the Abbotts had a baby in tow, there might be a time jump between films. In A Quiet Place, after the Abbotts’ son Beau died, there was over a year that elapsed toward the beginning of the first movie. This opened up the storyline of Emily Blunt’s character, Evelyn, being about to give birth to a new child. The teaser trailer confirms there won’t be a time jump, at least in part. In the teaser, Evelyn and her children, Regan, Marcus, and the newborn baby, are traveling to a new location. Whether this is a permanent move because their farmhouse became completely compromised is unknown; they could be doing some sort of supply run or even have a situation where they have combined forces with other survivors.
Djimon Hounsou and Cillian Murphy’s roles in the film are still relatively mysterious, but Murphy’s character has been described as an “enigmatic traveler.” Though A Quiet Place’s ending was vague as to what happened with the battle between the surviving members of the Abbott family and the alien creatures, Blunt’s injured foot is bandaged and very present in the teaser, which shows them carefully walking on sand-covered leaves to muffle the sound of their footsteps. Before giving birth in the first film, Blunt’s character stepped on a protruding nail, which is how her foot got injured; since it hasn’t fully healed, this also confirms not much time has elapsed since the final sequence of the first film and where the second picks up.
Regan (Millicent Simmonds) is carrying a map, and seems to have a specific location marked on it, so that might dictate that they are heading somewhere for assistance after Lee’s death. Whether they are seeking medical assistance for Evelyn or the baby is unknown, but could be a possibility. The teaser does an excellent job at capturing the anxiety-inducing effects of the first film, where every sound produced could be a potential danger. There are still many mysteries to unravel, and it’s likely the full trailer for A Quiet Place 2 will deliver more answers.
