The first A Quiet Place 2 trailer has been released alongside Black Christmas. The sequel to the 2018 horror-thriller has been widely anticipated after the original’s tremendous success, which even saw the film receive an Oscar nomination for sound editing.
Directed, co-written and starring John Krasinski alongside his real-life wife Emily Blunt, A Quiet Place told a post-apocalyptic tale with a very unique twist. After society is largely eliminated by a blind alien species that hunts by sound, the Abbott family relocate to a rural home, which is fortified by a variety of homemade security measures. Life there continues in a silent but safe manner – that is, until one day it no longer does. Because their daughter Beau is deaf, the family communicates with sign language, which, aside from being an essential method of conversing, also keeps them safe from attack by creatures that would otherwise hear the Abbotts speak. As life becomes increasingly challenging for the family, the late stages of Evelyn’s (Blunt) pregnancy begin to pose an even greater risk for the family’s survival. The film grossed an astounding $340 million internationally, all on a $17 million budget. With numbers like that, a sequel was bound to happen sooner or later.
Thankfully, A Quiet Place won’t be getting a cynical sequel in which none of the original talent returns. Instead, Krasinski has stayed true to fans, returning to write, direct and star in A Quiet Place 2. The rest of the cast will also return, as well as some new additions such as Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders) and Djimon Hounsou (Shazam!). Fans have been eagerly awaiting a trailer for the upcoming film and while that has yet to officially drop, Screen Rant can now confirm that a teaser for the sequel has been seen screening alongside festive horror slasher, Black Christmas. Though very brief, (running roughly 20 seconds), the teaser shows Evelyn walking with the children along a trail through a forest, being extremely careful not to make a sound. The title appears over this and Evelyn’s foot clearly bears a bandage.
Fans will recall that in the heart-racing final act of A Quiet Place, Evelyn stepped on an exposed nail while in labor. The fact that the new teaser trailer shows that her foot is still bandage implies that the sequel will take place almost immediately after the events of the first film. This potentially makes for an even more engaging story, as the pace and intensity of the original film’s finale can carry over into the sequel. We might not know exactly what A Quiet Place 2 has in store for us in terms of story, but if this teaser is any indication, Krasinski hasn’t lost his touch for tension inducing scenes. We do know that more of the world in which others struggle against these alien invaders will be explored, and with a way to combat the creatures having been discovered by the end of the first film, the success of this hotly anticipated sequel could end up surpassing the original.
For now, however, it’s still far too soon to be sure about much. Krasinski is not a filmmaker who likes to give away too much too soon, and that approach works perfectly with a film series like this one. While the teaser may not give away a lot about what to expect in A Quiet Place 2, it does manage to assure fans that the aesthetic and style that made the first film such a hit will return in the sequel.
