Marvel has a jam-packed year in 2017, with no less than three new movies on the slate: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok. This third installment in the Thor franchise is sure to be an absolutely epic one, as the characters gear up for Avengers: Infinity War in 2018. We already know Thor may lose his hammer for in the film, and that director Taika Waititi has promised an incredible spectacle, but we still don’t know too much about what will actually be happening in the movie.
Now, Tom Hiddleston (the MCU’s Loki) has spoken about the film, and claims that this version of Thor will be the funniest one we have seen in the MCU so far.
Today, Erik Davis (Managing Editor of Fandango) posted a video of Tom Hiddleston at a Kong: Skull Island press event, talking about his role in the upcoming MCU adventure. He said:
This fits perfectly with what director Waititi has previously said about the humor in the film, when he said that he wanted to “keep people laughing along the way.” This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise for MCU fans, either, as the massive cinematic universe is known for its humor-heavy take on superheroes (in stark contrast to other comic book vehicles).
At the end of The Dark World, Loki is on the throne. At the beginning of Ragnarok, Thor has a few questions, Loki is endearingly enigmatic about providing answers. Taika Waititi is such a spirited, hilarious individual, and he and Chris [Hemsworth] became very fast friends. What was great for me to see was to see their friendship kind of blossom, and they brought out the best in each other, and started making stuff up, and I can confidently say right now that this will be the funniest depiction of the character of Thor that you’ve ever seen. I personally have known for almost ten years that Chris Hemsworth is hilarious.
We cannot wait to see Hiddleston back in the spotlight in a new Thor film, and from this interview it sounds like the actor has complete faith in the director and the project, which is wonderful to hear. Thor has always been a character who balances incredible action scenes and sheer brawn with his own warm humor, and with such a dark topic (the Norse Apocalypse), we’re thrilled to hear that there will be plenty of opportunities to laugh in the cinema this November.
Of course, some fans may be less-than-thrilled to hear that yet another MCU movie is going to be heavy on the jokes. One of the major criticisms leveled at Avengers: Age of Ultron was that the film tried a little too hard to cram one-liners in everywhere it could. For those superhero fans who prefer their movies on the grittier side, Ragnarok may have seemed like the perfect opportunity for Marvel to do something a little darker.
