2017’s Thor: Ragnarok made it so that Chris wasn’t the only Hemsworth that got to play the God of Thunder. Known for its humor and colorful personality, the third installment in the Thor franchise oversaw a major reinvention of the character, going from a stoic, Shakespearean-sounding god to funnier, more human one. This transformation can be attributed to the talent of Chris Hemsworth, although, when talking about the Thor renaissance it can’t be ignored that he and one of his siblings have shared the role in some way.

Following the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor has left Earth in search of the Infinity Stones. In doing so, he also left Asgard and the happenings within it, leaving his once thought-to-be-dead brother Loki to cause mischief as only he can. Taking Odin’s place and of course his power, as followed up on from the rather disappointing finale of Thor: The Dark World, he has made some ego-stroking changes to Asgard. Aside from the giant statues of himself, Loki as Odin spends his days watching a play rendition of his “sacrifice” from the prior Thor film. This is where things take a funny turn.

It can be seen that in the play, the actors who are taking up the roles of the Gods are not mere stand-ins. With Matt Damon playing Loki, Luke Hemsworth, the real life brother of Chris Hemsworth, has taken up the position of Thor. This cameo was pretty meta to say the least, and technically has made yet another member of their family the God of Thunder. Though it was only for a very small portion of the film, the Westworld star got to spend some time in the long, blonde hair and red cape that his brother has helped to make famous since 2011.

Thor: Ragnarok is a film that struck a perfect blend of comedy and superhero action. Director Taika Waititi’s unique sense of humor is what allowed for the movie and this particular moment to work properly. Bringing in another Hemsworth to play Thor, if only for a brief time, was a subtle nod and wink to those paying close attention. Funnily enough, it was Chris’ brother Liam who almost snatched the role out from under him years ago, however Luke was the one that ultimately got to spend some time on the big screen as Thor. Thankfully, in this context it did not interfere with the success of his sibling.

With Thor: Love and Thunder on the way, it is not unlikely that a scene like this could arise again. Obviously Asgard being destroyed at the end of Thor: Ragnarok rules out the possibility of plays about Thor and Loki taking place, but who’s to say Luke Hemsworth won’t reprise his role of fake Thor or make a guest appearance at some capacity? Or perhaps Liam will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in some way or another alongside his brother Chris? There is little known about the upcoming fourth Thor movie, so for the time being speculating is all that fans can really do.
