Ubisoft has announced an upcoming multiplayer event for Rainbow Six Siege, and it will be based on the lauded Netflix series Money Heist. Limited-time events are a fairly new idea for Siege, and this will be the first one to feature a crossover with another property.
Ubisoft started adding special events to the game as part of Year 4 of Rainbow Six Siege. There have only been a handful of them so far, with the most recent one being the Halloween-themed event Doktor’s Curse. Another example was the Wild West-style Showdown, and each event has offered new cosmetics as well as unique versions of game modes and maps. For those unaware of the source of this latest event, Money Heist is a Spanish crime drama show that started broadcasting on Netflix in 2017 and involves a coordinated group of thieves robbing the Royal Mint of Spain. Its original title was La casa de papel (“The House of Paper”) when it was first airing in Spain, and the show was widely acclaimed for its intelligent plot and its host of complex and conflicting characters. Netflix is currently airing the third season and is looking to promote it, and it seems Ubisoft is willing to share its audience.
In a press release today, Ubisoft revealed that it will be holding the Money Heist event in Rainbow Six Siege between November 20 and November 25. The event will feature a new take on the Hostage game mode, and will be set on the map Bank. Hostages in this mode will be dressed in the “infamous red suit and iconic mask worn by the robbers and their captives in Money Heist.” Two of the game’s playable operators, Vigil and Hibana, will also be getting red jumpsuits and masks.
The press release states that eight special cosmetic items will be available during the event, including uniforms, headgear, weapon skins and charms. The bundles will be exclusive to the event and are purchased with R6 Credits. The game will also be getting yet another free weekend on all platforms, allowing anyone to download and play the event. The full game will also be on deep discount once again during the event, depending on the platform and edition.
Rainbow Six Siege has built and maintained a large and fiercely dedicated player base for a few years now. However, that growth seems to have evened out after the earlier boom of players who funneled into the game once its competitive potential was realized. Ubisoft has been trying to draw more people into Siege with frequent sales and free weekends, but using this event to appeal to heist fans in both the video game and television crowds could be its most effective strategy yet.
