Ubisoft has officially unveiled the trailer for Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege’s 21st map that’s shipping along side the Year Four Season One content update titled Operation Burnt Horizon. Titled “Outback” to match the Australian them of Burnt Horizon, this make is set at a remote pit stop where a passing nuclear convoy came crashing to a halt while under attack, forcing locals and patrons to flee and causing the Rainbow Six teams to be called in.
Operation Burnt Horizon will also a pair of new playable operators to Rainbow Six Siege, who we believe are called Gridlock and Mozzie. They’re members of the Australian Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) and have abilities to trap roaming defenders and capture attacker drones.
Welcome to the Outback! Set in Australia’s Red Heart, this map is an homage to all the dusty service stations and motels that populate the forgotten highways of the continent, places filled with hardworking locals and specialty menu items you’ll find nowhere else:
According to Assistant Level Design Director Jacques Wong, the fan-favorite maps of Oregon and Clubhouse served as the main inspiration in designing Outback:
One of the design tenets of Outbreak was to embrace one of the older styles of gameplay while also supporting the current meta. That means, less doors and pathways until operators create them through destroying walls.
“We divided the map into three distinct sections – the Garage, the Motel, and the Restaurant – and put a lot of effort into making sure each section is recognizable, even from far away. There are specific colors for each section, and we used lighting and geometry to direct the player’s gaze to where they need to go.”
Outbreak has three main sections and look very unique to each other. Ubisoft promises, “rooms packed with souvenirs and cultural artifacts from many a roadside petrol station across the Great Southern Land.” And there’s a big noticeable mascot you’ll see in the trailer. His name is Norman.
“We wanted to emphasize the impact of player decision-making, so for example, there’s a limited number of doors between each sections. Roamers can still create new paths by destroying walls, and there’s always the option of changing floors as a flanking strategy. It’s a medium-sized map, so players won’t need to go far to find alternative routes.”
The full reveal of the operators and new map (and updates to the game) will come from the Rainbow Six Twitch Channel on February 17, 2019 during the Six Invitational in Montréal.
