Ramy season 2 is happening, and here’s everything we know about it. Blending comedy and drama, Ramy began streaming on Hulu in April 2019. It was a hit with critics, with many praising its nuanced portrayal of Muslims, but the series has flown under the radar. Following Ramy Youssef’s unexpected victory at the Golden Globes for Best Actor in a Television Musical or Comedy, there’s been an increased interest in finding out about Ramy season 2. The show has been renewed, with an Academy Award winner slated for a guest appearance.

Created by the team of Ramy Youssef, Ari Katcher, and Ryan Welch, with A24 on board as one of the production companies, Ramy season 1 introduced viewers to Ramy Hassan. The character, as portrayed by Youssef, is a first-generation American Muslim that struggles between conflicting identities. In certain moments, he wants to live a carefree life without being questioned about his future or his aspirations. At other times, even when he seems not quite sure about what that would actually entail, Ramy feels the pull to adhere more closely to his faith. In similar fashion to Netflix’s Master of None, episodes of the series have taken a standalone form with recurring themes.

In the Ramy season 1 finale, after hitting a low point, Ramy seemed to figure out a path towards contentment and clarity. Will Ramy season 2 pick up that thread? Will the character fall back into old habits? Will more episodes focus on the perspectives of Ramy’s family, like his mother and his sister? Here’s everything we know so far.

Ramy Season 2 Release Date Info

Ramy season 2 was made official, with Hulu renewing the series in May 2019. Although no official release date has been revealed yet, all 10 episodes of Ramy season 1 dropped on April 19. it’s likely that Ramy season 2 will be released sometime in spring 2020, if the same scheduling plan is to be followed, between March and May.

Ramy Season 2 Story Details

Ramy season 1 concluded with the title character travelling to Egypt, with the hopes of connecting with his roots. Ramy reaches this decision after his father (Amr Waked) discovers that he’s been engaged in an affair with a married woman. Feeling guilty, and sensing that he’s strayed from the person he wants to be, Ramy intends to travel to a village to reunite with his grandfather in simple surroundings. The trip doesn’t go as Ramy imagines at first, with his grandfather passing away, but it ends on a note of optimism. Ramy meets Amani, his cousin, who takes him on the fulfilling spiritual journey he’s been seeking.

Ramy season 2 should address the aftermath of Ramy’s trip in some way, continuing to delve into the protagonist’s desire for deeper faith. It is also likely that the series will continue to explore the lives of those in Ramy’s orbit. Some of the most striking episodes of season 1 unfolded from the perspectives of Maysa and Dena, Ramy’s mother and sister respectively, played by Hiam Abbass and May Calamawy. The series successfully, and often hilariously, weaves together experiences which are at once specific to Arab Muslims and universal. This approach is sure to continue.

Ramy Season 2 Cast

Ramy Youssef will be back, with Waked, Abbas, and Calamawy expected to continue in their roles. Laith Nakli, as Naseem, Ramy’s misogynist uncle, has been promoted to series regular. Ramy’s close friends, portrayed by Mohammed Amer, Dave Merheje, and Stephen Way, should be back as well. The Ramy season 2 cast will also feature a special guest star: the two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, who has been described as a big fan of Ramy. It’s unclear what his role will be in Ramy season 2.
